Excavation Glossary
Common Excavation Terms
Understanding the terminology helps you communicate clearly with your excavation contractor and make informed decisions for your project.
- Site Preparation
- The process of clearing, grading, and preparing land before construction begins. Includes removing debris, leveling soil, and creating stable ground conditions for building foundations, driveways, or other structures.
- Dozer Work
- Using a bulldozer to push, cut, and move large amounts of soil and material. Essential for rough grading, land clearing, site prep, and shaping terrain on large projects.
- Trenching
- Digging a narrow, deep trench in the ground for installing utilities such as water pipes, sewer lines, electrical conduit, or drainage systems. Requires precision to meet depth requirements.
- Grading
- The process of leveling or shaping the ground surface to a desired slope or elevation. Proper grading directs water drainage away from structures and creates a stable base for construction.
- Cut and Fill
- A grading technique where material is cut from high areas of a site and used to fill low areas. Creates level building pads and road bases without hauling in extra material.
- Earthmoving
- The general term for excavating, moving, and placing large quantities of earth or rock. Earthmoving equipment includes bulldozers, scrapers, motor graders, and dump trucks.
- Scraper Work
- Using a motor scraper — a large self-loading machine — to excavate and transport material efficiently across a job site. Ideal for large-scale earthmoving where large volumes of dirt need moving quickly.
- Pond Excavation
- Digging out a basin to create a pond on agricultural or residential property. Requires careful depth planning, shaping of the banks, and consideration of soil type for water retention.
- Building Pad
- A leveled, compacted area of ground prepared for construction of a building foundation. Site preparation and cut-and-fill work create the building pad to the required elevation and dimensions.
- Storm Drainage
- A system of underground pipes and channels that directs rainwater and surface runoff away from structures and property. Excavation is required to install drainage pipes at proper depth and slope.
- Right-of-Way
- A designated strip of land used for infrastructure such as roads, utilities, or pipelines. Excavation within right-of-way requires specific permits and coordination with local authorities.
- Subgrade
- The native soil layer below the base course of a road or building foundation. The subgrade must be properly compacted and graded for stability before any base material is placed.
